ADOLESCENTS
Adolescent Anxiety (Ages 14-17)
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, approximately 25% of 13- to 18-year-old have an anxiety disorder, and fewer than 6% have a severe anxiety disorder. While anxiety is a natural and healthy response to stress (ie: final exams, giving a presentation, first dates), some teens anxiety goes beyond this to an anxiety disorder. While, it’s tempting to chalk up teen struggles to hormones, it’s important to be aware of and recognize severe anxiety symptoms.
Some important signs to look for anxiety include changes
TIME
Appearing on edge
Irritability
Outbursts
Restlessness
ACCESSIBILITY
Avoiding extracurricular activities
Lack of participation in usual activities
Social Isolation from family and friends
Staying in their rooms
CONSISTENT COSTS
Decreased energy
Frequent headache
Gastrointestinal complaints
Other physical complaints
